Our Identity

Our Congregation was founded on 8th December 1854 as the Congregation of our Lady of Seven Dolours. We acquired Servite characteristics through affiliation of the sisters individually to the Order of Servants of Mary on 11 July 1865. On 18 September 1927 we were affiliated as a Congregation to the Order of servants of Mary. From then on the Congregation began to be known as the Congregation of Our Lady of Seven Dolours, Servants of Mary. We added O.S.M. at the end of our names. In its nature ours is an apostolic Congregation raised to the Pontifical status on 5 March 1957. We changed the name ‘Congregation of Our Lady of Seven Dolours’ to the ‘Congregation of Mother of Sorrows’ in 1975 because the word ‘Dolours; was invariably understood as the American Currency. Hence at present we are known as ‘Congregation of Mother of Sorrows Servants of Mary’.
